Watkins Glen NY
We moved to the south end of the Finger Lakes. Not much color in the trees yet. On theNorth end the color was just starting to come out. But the Finger Lakes are a good week or more behind the Lake Placid area as far as color goes. Two days after we left Lake Placid the night time temps got into the low 20's.
Beautiful day today. Very nice drive along Seneca Lake.
Our campground is in Watkins Glen State Park.
Our home has lots of large windows and is very bright and sunny. Thats how we like it. Our camper has lots of windows also and the interior is the lightest color scheme they offered.
This campground is in deep woods and is very dark. Very dark. When we are inside the camper we need to have lights on. It's a good thing we never spend a lot of daytime hours at the campground. We would go nuts here.
While I am venting about the campground let me tell you about getting into this campground.
I looked at the maps on line last night, so I was already aware that I needed to bypass the Headquarters building and go just a little further to get to the campground and check-in.
I turned in off the highway and went up the hill to the campground entrance. There was another office building just after the entrance. The sign said to go on past the day use area and check-in at the campground. So we followed more signs and went up a very steep hill with lots of potholes and found another building at the top. It was a typical state campground arrangement. But the door was locked and a sign on the door said to check in at the office at the bottom of the hill. The mile long steep hill with all of the holes in the surface. No way in hell was I going to turn this rig around and go back down that hill, over that road, just to try and find a place to turn it around and go right back up the shill with all of the holes. I was pissed, really pissed.
I said to Gloria...Gloria, we are just going to go to the site number they gave us with the reservation, and if they say we need to go to a different site I WILL come unglued.
We go to the site, without a layout map. There were so many trees around that site, and the road was narrow, and the site was angled the wrong way for the direction we were traveling, that is took 45 minutes to get the camper parked and unhooked.
Then down the hill I went with the just the truck to do the check-in. I was gone a very long time. Gloria, who stayed back in the camper was getting concerned, then she heard sirens. Her first thought was that I lost it and they called for back up!
The sires were from ambulances and rescue vehicles for someone down in the gorge.
We spent the afternoon in downtown Watkins Glen. Did some shopping. Gloria didn't buy anything, Tom got a pair of jeans and a pair of pants.
Got a quick hike in the gorge in before dark. Took a few pictures.
