Sunday's Update
Yesterday was cold and rainy. We drove out to the Wild Center. A pretty cool place. They had some great exhibits and a lot of native creatures from the area. I'll post some pictures later. They are adding on to there exhibits in a grand scale. Opening next July will be a walk way that is near the tops of the trees. They had a scale model of it in the exhibit hall. The rain had let up a little so we did do one of the short hikes.
Today we went to Church in Lake Placid, then went to the pancake breakfast that the campground was having. Our plan for today was to do the Veterans Memorial Drive. This 5 mile toll road take you to within 276ft of the summit of Whiteface Mountain. At that level is a building called the Castle. It's called that for obvious reasons once you see the actual building. At the Castle you can hike up a trail over rock ledge and boulders, or go into a 400 foot long tunnel to get to the center of the mountain and then take an elevator up the 276 feet to the top.
What did we do... we did both the trail and the elevator. We can see east side of Whiteface from the road in front of our campground. From this vantage point we could see the top was in the clouds, but the forecast was for clearing weather, so he headed up.
You are traveling uphill for just over 3 miles to get to the start of the 5 mile road. We passed a cycler pedaling up the road. ( at the summit we saw several cyclers ). This is a serious climb on a bike....
At a point about 2/3 of the way up the trees were covered with ice and we were in clouds. The visibility was near zero. The temperature at the top was 31 degrees when we go there. They said it was 26 this morning. At the campground we had 42. Lake Placid village was 38 at 8:00 am.
The trail for the last 276 feet was closed because of the ice. So we took the elevator up. It was clearing a little so after a time we went into the restaurant and had lunch. It had warmed enough to melt the ice and the trail was open when we had finished lunch. So we did the trail to go back up.
The clouds were in and out for the remainder of our time there. The views were spectacular. It was an awesome experience. I have a ton of pictures, but little time to download and edit them. I did manage to get 3 done tonight and they are below.
We finished the day with a couple hours on the river flyfishing.
Tomorrow we move south and west to Old Forge. The Lake Placid area was great, It has been a great adventure here for us.
