Machu Picchu III

In my previous post I said we were back at the Machu Picchu Ruins and set to hike the Sun Gate Trail. Sun Gate was a controll point on the Inca Trail, a point where the incas could control who went on to Machu Picchu.  It offers, on a clear day, the first glimpse of the ruins for those making the 4 day trek on the Inca Trail.  It is about a 1 1/2 - 2 hour hike from the Caretakers House at the  ruins to the gate and it's all uphill gaining about 980 feet elevation.  The trail was wet and slippery during our hike.

We picked up an other local expert guide for this part of the trip.  On this day the group members had choices for hikes and Manuel left some and our Sun Gate hike was led by Jessica.

I have a lot of pictures from this hike and I will spread them out over two or three more post.
In this post you will see the trail with us on it.
At our first point of interest is what is believed to be a burial site for a member of royalty.  Gloria, Rachel and Joann pose for a shots here.
There are  lots of flowers, like the orchids pictured.
Next point of interest is what was a rest stop for the Inca travelers on the trail.  There was food stored there for them.
