Morning Catch
A a young Tricolored Heron gets a quick snack. There a few items of interest in this image.
1) Pima County Arizona is a bit out of the normal range for a Tricolored Heron. They are mainly along the coast. So the Gulf of California would be the closest for their typical range.
2) If you look closely you might make out the nictitating membrane (third eyelid ) which is partially opened. Most diving birds have this translucent third eye lid to allow them to keep their eyes open under water and to protect their eyes from thrashing prey. I don't think this little fish is much of a threat for an eye injury though.
