Plaza de La Independence
Today’s post continues with our walking tour of Quito’s downtown. The parts of Quito we visited that morning are known as the Quito’s Colonial area. This area includes the heart of Quito, Plaza de La Independenzia ( Independence Plaza ).
Independence Plaza has among other interesting things the Presidential Palace. Complete with guards in traditional uniforms. I never did get a good picture of one of these guards, though if you look closely you can see one. The palace would be the building with the razor wire on the porch. I am not certain if the razor wire is always there or if maybe it went up during the very confrontational protest that occurred on the plaza just a few weeks before our tour.
The large winged statue in the center of the plaza is said to symbolize freedom.
