Speaks To Me
Every once in a while I make an image that speaks to me a little. There is some quality that just draws me to the image. This image of a doe Coues white-tailed deer is one of those images. The Coues (pronounced "cows") is a small subspecies found in the American Southwest and Northern Mexico. I see them in Madera Canyon near our home in Green Valley. This deer was in Madera Canyon a just few days ago.
I think that one of the things I really like about this image is the fact that I doubt the viewer would likely not realize that it was made in the desert southwest. This light shaded area looks a lot like any other habitat frequented by white-tails. But even with the disguise habitat aside, I think it is because it reminds me of countless times I have hunted or hiked in the woods and surprised a whitetail. If you freeze quickly and remain still, it can be an extended staring match while the deer tries to figure you out and anticipate your next move. It is this memory drawing emotion that I connect with. I guess that's why I may have the white balance a little bit warmer than normal, bringing out the warm feeling I get when I view it.
