Urk

A portfolio of scenes from around the town of Urk, a unique fishing village in the Netherlands.  We learned that Urk (pop. 22,000) was once an Island and the fishing fleet had easy access to the North Sea.  Once the dikes were built and the water levels dropped..in 1939 Urk was no long an Island.  Boats from Urk can still reach the sea through narrow channels including a lock and fishing is still Urk's major economic endeavor, but the fleet is now docked at ports out on the coast.
