We are here !
Just like on a map for a hiking trail...."you are here". Well here we are. We are all set up on our campsite on Mustang Island TX. We had a 2 week reservation starting the 12th of December. But our site was available today so we are good to go 2 days early.
The trip here today was the worst part of the whole trip. Last night I looked at all the different ways we could get to Mustang Island and deal with Huston, the largest city in one of the largest states in all of the USA. I didn't pay much attention to Lufkin. I could see the highway from our campground. But things went very wrong right at the start.
Our truck is 4 years old, and the Navigation system has served us well......until today. It did things that were crazy, just crazy. For example, you can choose the fastest route, the shortest route or the easiest route. From Lufkin to Port Aransas it said the fastest route was like 475 miles and 8 hours. If we picked the shortest route it was 5 hours and 30 mins and 350 miles. Now how is the fastest route 8 hours plus? So we were no sooner 2 miles down the road and I was in a neighborhood pulling a 34 foot trailer that is just under 13 feet high. And just as I feared we immediately came to a railroad bridge that was just over 13 ft clearance. I held my breath as we went under. So this is tiny Lufkin TX and we had to deal with Houston yet.
Well I decided I had enough of ONSTAR and just went US 59 right down the middle of Houston. Being Saturday mid day what could be the problem....High School Football Playoffs, that could be a big deal in Texas. It was just in the one area and everyone was mostly already there so it wasn't too bad.
We are coming in from the east to Port Aransas, so that means the ferry to get over to the Island. By this point our luck had changed for the better. Wait...... I forgot to mention, Gloria hurt her back this morning getting ready to leave. But back to the Ferry, our luck improved. The sign coming to the ferry said the wait time was 15 minutes. But we drove right on and we were underway in just a few minutes. It was a short and smooth crossing and a short drive to our campground.
We are here with 2 extra days to get re-acquainted with the area. From what we saw in the air on the way in and headlines on a newspaper in the grocery store, Whooping Cranes are here for the winter.
Maybe some crane sightings and a few pictures could be in the cards.
