Corkscrew Swamp
Gloria has a friend ( Jane Alcock) who lives in Naples Florida. Jane volunteers at Corkscrew Swamp. Jane takes a lot of pictures while she is at the swamp and shares them with Gloria who then shows them to me.
I have said to Gloria many times that if we are ever in the Naples area I want to go to Corkscrew Swamp.
The Swamp is an Audubon preserve that was created to protect the old growth cypress trees and the wildlife habitat that exist there. They have some 2.5 miles of boardwalk for visitors to walk on and there are volunteers such as Jane all along the boardwalk to answer questions and help visitors.
Visiting the swamp was one of the first things we did 2 weeks ago while we were in the Fort Myers/Naples area. I found it very challenging to photograph in the swamp. First you are confined to the boardwalk ( I wouldn't even think of getting off the boardwalk ). This can make compositions difficult, You can only get so close and the angle might not be what you want. Second it is a swamp. There are trees and plants everywhere. It is difficult to get a clear shot of anything. Third the light is very tough. You have bright sunlight and deep shade all at the same time.
Despite all of the challenges I loved this place. There is wildlife and plants galore. I have never experienced so much in a wild environment. There is nothing to restrain the wildlife and with the exception of a couple of backyard bird feeders, everything is self sufficient.
I went back for a second day. Below is a link to a slide show of my favorite images from 1,000 or so pictures I took those 2 days. My next challenge is to ID all of the birds and plants.
I thick you will enjoy them more if you view them full screen. If the viewer doesn't open in full screen automatically for you, you can change the view mode by clicking in the lower right corner of the viewer as shown in the picture below.
