It's a sad day in Cheboygan. Overnight the Carnation Restaurant burnt. The building appears to be a total loss. It looks like the fire companies did a great job of containing the fire to the one building, despite the shared walls. I have not heard of any injuries or a cause for the blaze.
Gloria is very shaken by the loss. For her entire childhood and most of her adult life the Carnation was there and a comfortable place to go. We had breakfast their most Sundays that we were in town. It was one of those places where the owner and the cook knew you well and knew what you ordered. You just came in picked a table and sat down. In a few minutes ( very few) a carafe of coffee came to the table and in a few more minutes came breakfast. No need to order. I always said that of I did want something other than the no 2 special I would have to call ahead.
Actually it was a double blow because upstairs was the TOP of The Greek. Our favorite restaurant for dinner.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jackie, her family and all of the employees. They have all suffered a great loss. Gloria and I hope that they can rebuild and come back as great as before or better than before. The restaurant has been in the Pappas family since 1926. There is a lot of history there and the entire community will feel the loss.
